This area of Study corresponds closely to the Preliminary Core Unit 6PC3 Aboriginal beliefs and Spirituality
Through undertaking this area of study students will be able to achieve the following Unit Outcomes
- explain the links between Aboriginal cosmology, value systems, Dreaming stories, symbolism, art forms and ritual practices
- locate and explain biblical references that illuminate the nature of religious experience, cosmology and the religious significance of land
Approaches to Learning
The approaches suggested below indicate a range of strategies that may be undertaken to allow students to engage with the requirements of this part of the syllabus. Teachers may wish to use one or more of these approaches in addressing this area of study. The suggestions are intended as a guide only and are not exhaustive.
- Explore examples of Dreaming stories. If possible use those of the Aboriginal group of the local area
- View the video Land, Kinship and Culture and make use of the accompanying study guide
- Allow students to develop an appreciation of the Dreaming in the lives of a particular Aboriginal community. This can be done through contact with Aborigines from the local area, through cultural exchange programs, through invitations to guest speakers and/or use of multi media resources such as Lore of the Land or Moorditj
- Develop a definition of the dreaming incorporating key elements such as creation, sacred sites, stories, symbolism and art
