Students learn about:

  • The development of Islam under the leadership of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs

Students learn to:

  • Describe the development of Islam after the death of Muhammad under the leadership of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs, accounting for the emergence of the Sunni and the Shi'ia

Approaches to Learning

The approaches suggested below indicate a range of strategies that may be undertaken to allow students to engage with the requirements of this part of the syllabus. Teachers may wish to use one or more of these approaches in addressing this area of study. The suggestions are intended as a guide only and are not exhaustive.

  • Use a group work process to research the contributions of each of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs
  • Prepare posters outlining the work of each of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs
  • Organise a class debate to consider the issue of the choice of the Caliph's and whether they should have been descendents of the Prophet Muhammad or the most worthy candidate from among the tribe of the Prophet
  • Research the origins and distinguishing characteristics of Sunni and Shi'ia Muslims
